Freshmen Prove Royally

At Exeter Saturday afternoon, the freshman swimming team accumulated its third straight victory in as many meets, 48 to 29. In the process, Gary Pildner set a Harvard freshman record in the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:02.8. The previous mark was 1:03.5, set in 1950 by Donald Mulvey.

The Yardlings were upset in the 50-freestyle, but James Perilman won the 100-yard breaststroke, captain Koni Ulbrich won the 200-freestyle, and Bill Boechler the 100-free. Pete Lewy won for the Yardlings on the one meter board, and Ulbrich took the 150-yard individual medley.

The top five players on the freshman squash team defeated a perenially powerful Exeter team, 5 to 0, at Exeter Saturday. Jerry Emmet, Charlie Poletti, AlVinton, Nick Lamont, and John Scullip all won with very little difficulty.

The second team administered a 4-1 defeat to a Brooks team which had been rated about even with the Yardling "B" team on the basis of past performances. According to coach Corey Wynn, this performance over the week-end indicates that the freshmen have developed greatly with regards to depth and should be very hard to beat in coming matches.

Ahead by only four points at the last event, the high jump, the freshman track team scored a sweep to defeat Andover 60 to 48 at Andover Saturday. Burt Lieberman, Don Di Bona, and Cal Keap all cleared 5 feet 8 inches to give the Yardlings a three way tie for first in the high jump.

Possibly most outstanding for the Freshmen was Pat Liles, who won the broadjump, placed second in the 300, and tied for second in the pole vault. Other Yardling winners were Art Cahn in the 1000, Art Hoyt in the 600, Doc Bennett in the pole vault, Jeff Paley in the shot and Dunc Johnson in the 35 pound weight.

The freshman hockey team won its second straight shutout victory on Saturday when it beat the Williams freshman sextet 6 to 0 on a rain-spattered rink at Williamstown.

The Yardlings divided their goals evenly between the three periods, with Pete Rient and Harold Morgan scoring in the first frame, Captain Bruce Gillie and Mike Graney in the second, and Dick Kalil and Mel Hodder in the third.

The rain produced such treacherous footing on the ice that neither team was able to maintain a consistent attack.

With the score tied at 11-all heavy-weight Ted Robbins decisioned his Columbia opponent, 5 to 1 to give the Yardling wrestlers a 14-11 victory on the Lion Freshman mats Saturday.

John Watkins at 130, Dick Steinzig at 137, and Pete Rogers at 177 also scored decisions for the Yardlings.
