Confident Crimson Quintet Faces Powerful Bowdoin Team Tonight

A confident Crimson basketball squad will challenge Bowdoin at Brunswick, Me., tonight. The varsity will be facing a more formidable opponent than the UMass squad which it routed 84 to 58 here in the season opener.

The Crimson overwhelmed its opposition Monday, but never received an opportunity to demonstrate its potential. The weak UMass team crumpled early in the game, and offered only negligible resistance.

Coach Floyd Wilson expressed concern yesterday about Crimson reserve strength. The whole squad saw action against UMass, but the substitutes generally lacked effectiveness. Wilson commended Bryant Danner, 6 ft. 6 in. forward, for a particularly outstanding performance.

New Bowdoin Coach

The Bowdoin Polar Bears will be opening their season tonight under a new coach, Bob Donham. He will employ a man-to-man defense, while the Crimson will rely on its usual defense. Like the Crimson, Bowdoin has only two returning starters and only half its squad lettered last year.

The big Bear threat tonight will be Brud Stover, the 6 ft. 1 in. guard who was instrumental in defeating the Crimson when the two teams last clashed, in 1956. He averaged 22 points last year and is within 24 points of setting an all time total scoring record at Bowdoin. Dick Willey, a 5 ft. 8 in. junior guard, is the Bears' only other returning starter.
