The freshman intramural basketball tournament got off to a fast start this week as all 20 teams saw action at either Hemenway Gymnasium or the Indoor Athetic Building. The most successful was Holworthy, which scored a first game high of 48 points in crushing Weld South 18 to 13 yesterday evening.

In the American League, Greenough, Hurlbut, Thayer Middle and Mower captured first round victories at the I.A.B. Monday evening, while Straus North won at Hemenway yesterday afternoon.

National League winners were Holworthy, Thayer South, Matthews South and Stoughton at the I.A.B. yesterday evening and Dudley at Hemenway yesterday afternoon.

The high scorer so far is John Santos of Matthews South, who tallied 20 points in the 32 to 29 defeat of Straus South. Henry Zoob was high man for the losers with 14 points. Other scoring leaders are Bill Rodgers of Holworthy with 14 points; Lee Nash of Holworthy with 13 points; and Dave Kales of Mower and Gerry Jordan of Greenough with 12 points.

The teams are competing in the first half of a two-round tournament. In February, the top division of each league will join together, while the bottom five teams of each league will compete among themselves. The winners of the two rounds will then play for the overall championship.
