Skydiving Team Wins Competition

The Harvard skydiving team took first place at the country's second intercollegiate parachute jumping competition, held on Saturday atop the windswept crest of The Good Hill Farm in Woodbury, Conn.

Captain Pete Haskell, jumping from about 2,300 feet above the white cross target area, landed within eight yards of the center of the cross to take first place in the spot jump event. Crimson chutist Dick Tompkins came down 13 yards from the target center, to win the sky dive-spot event.

The victorious Crimson skydivers received the Gavin Gavel, a trophy donated by Lieut. Gen. James M. Gavin, Army chief ofresearch and development. Haskell and Tompkins also received individual trophy cups. There were 11 other colleges represented at the meet, including Yale, Princeton, Amherst and Williams.
