Dartmouth Rugby Team Defeats Crimson 16-8

A hard-hitting Dartmouth rugby team gave the Crimson its first fall defeat and four casualties on Saturday, as it ran up a 16-0 half-time lead and held on to win, 16 to 8.

Playing with a strong wind behind them, the Indians scored four first-half tries and converted two of them, while the fumbling Crimson seldom came close to scoring.

Just after half-time the Crimson had already lost lock forward Philip Monnot with an ankle injury, but was settling down to harder rugby. Midway through the half, right wing Bob Downs, playing his first game for the side, took a pass from Jim Damis and went 20 yards to score. Captain Alan Waddell converted, to make it 16 to 5.

Five minutes later, Downs was carried off with a concussion, but a Dartmouth penalty gave Waddell the chance for a 30-yard place kick and three more points.

The story of the second fifteen match was rather similar, as the Indians scored two early tries and converted one for an 8-0 lead at the half. Crimson tries by fly half Al Velie and winger Barrett Churchill were not quite enough, as the conversions failed and Dartmouth won, 8 to 6.
