Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Only nine out of 33 Harvard clubs are opposed to extending any membership privileges to Radcliffe students, it was disclosed yesterday by Richard P. Zimon, '58, Chairman of the Harvard-Radcliffe Affiliation Committee.
The remaining 24 organizations favor the admission of women, and 16 of them would agree to change their names if doing so is a prerequisite for Radcliffe membership. Seventeen of the clubs would maintain an Annex representation on their executive boards if necessary.
Out of 15 Radcliffe clubs polled, 10 said they would prefer not to merge with their Harvard counterpart. Four favored combining, and one, the Radcliffe Dance Group, can find no corresponding club at Harvard, and currently allows men to participate in its organization.
Zimon has recommended to Dean Ballard, Secretary of the Committee on Student Activities, that the clubs which desire immediate merging be allowed to do so, and that organizational details be worked out later on an individual basis.
The Student Activities Committee met yesterday, but only discussed the question briefly. The Harvard deans plan a conference on the subject soon with Miss Frances R. Brown Radcliffe Dean of Residence and of Student Activities.
