The Crimson J.V. and third-string varsity bowed to Tufts' second-string varsity, 20-13, at Soldiers Field yesterday in a game marred by ten fumbles and nine penalties.
Harvard's two touchdowns came on a brilliant 47-yard run by halfback Al Cullen and a 2-yard plunge by fullback Dave Capiello. Tufts scored on marches of 35, 35 and 36 yards.
The initial marker came when Tufts recovered a Crimson fumble and scored in five plays. A minute after the Tufts' kickoff Harvard fumbled again on the 35-yard stripe, and Tufts acknowledegd the gift by crossing the goal in eight more plays. The conversion was good.
In the second quarter the third-string varsity, which had replaced the J.V. team, recovered a Tufts fumble on its own 49-yard line. After Stan Merkel moved the ball over the midfield strip, Al Cullen shot through a hole in the left side of the line and broke free. The speedy back cut across the field at the 35 and raced down the right sideline to pay-dirt, after a bone-crushing block by Merkel cleared the way. Ted Marmor converted.
In the third quarter, Tufts pounced on a Harvard fumble and moved 36 yards to score in five plays. A quick pass was good for the conversion, making the score 20-7. Harvard scored in the fourth quarter after recovering a fumble on the Tufts 2-yard line.
The J.V. line looked weak in the first half, as Tufts repeatedly ran over the guard and tackle positions for large gains. The defense was stronger in the second half, but the Crimson was unable to put together a drive that might have tied the score.
Coach Norman Shepard said that although three of his starters were out of action, "Tufts is just faster. They are more advanced than we are."
