Flu Epidemic Will Not Suspend Classes Here; Other Schools Hit

By Alan H. Grossman

"The University will not shut down, no matter how many cases of Asian Flu develop," Dr. Dana L. Farnsworth, Director of University Health Services, stated yesterday. He said that 66 flu patients were being cared for in Stillman, 25 in the Union infirmary, and about 65 in their rooms or at home.

Farnsworth said that "there is no advantage to be gained by closing the University. The problem must be met, and we have the facilities to deal with it here."

Brandeis University closed yesterday for ten days because of an outbreak which hit 75 of the university's 750 resident students. Infirmary facilities at Yale have been exhausted, and the athletic field house has been taken over as a new hospital center. Mount Holyoke College women have been "placed on their honor" not to date students at Williams, where the number of flu cases has reached epidemic proportions.

Four Cases at Radcliffe

Only four cases of influenza have been reported at Radcliffe, according to Dr. Sholem Postel, director of the Radcliffe Health Service.

The medical staffs at University infirmary centers were being aided last night by about 80 volunteers raised by the PBH General Hospitals Committee. The committee, which was commended for its "marvelous and fast action," still needs more volunteers who are experienced in hospital work. Radcliffe volunteers will not be used in University infirmaries because of possible "embarrassment to male patients," according to Lucy Busselle '59, a member of the committee.
