Central High School Attendance Climbs Despite Campaign

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Sept. 30--Attendance continued to climb at Central High School today despite a week-end telephone campaign urging parents to keep their children at home.

The League of Central High Mothers, a segregationist groups, conducted the campaign. The plan was to reach every home with children in school, but there was no indication how many had actually been called.

Today there were 1520 students in the school out of a total enrollment of 1990, according to Virgil T. Blossom, superintendent of schools.

This represented a gain of 105 from last Friday, when 1415 were present. On Thursday there were 1350 students in the school, and on Wednesday, the first day of federal intervention, only 1250 students attended school.

The steady decline in absentees is being used by opponents of Governor Orval E. Faubus to prove a willingness on the part of parents to accept integration, or at least to comply with the law.
