Crimson Wrestling Team Shows Well in Wilkes-Barre Competition

Varsity wrestling coach Bob Pickett ushered the old year out by ushering seven varsity and five freshman wrestlers into the Wilkes College Open Wrestling Tournament, December 28-29 at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The results bode something for the new year: the Crimson squad finished eighth or ninth in a field of 35 colleges, including victorious Pitt, Michigan, and Ohio State. Pickett's was the only Ivy team in the tournament.

Almost all of the Crimson wrestlers won first round matches while the most successful got into the fourth round. "They looked very good," said the usually non-commital Pickett.

At 130 lbs. for the varsity, sophomore Michael Abramovitz; at 147, Bob Crook; at 157, King Holmes, and Joey Noble. Bob Foster and Ted Raymond entered at 177 and sophomore Alan Culbert wrestled unlimited.

Varsity captain Bob Gilmor was prevented from wrestling at his accustomed 167 spot by an injury sustained the day before the tournament opened. The injury is not expected to prevent future competition.
