College enrollment in the United States this fall has reached a record total of nearly three million students according to a report issued by the Federal Government yesterday. The ten thousand men of Harvard constitute only about three tenths of one percent of the total.
Lawrence G. Dethick, U.S. Commissioner of Education, said that the current number of 2,947,000 students is ten percent above last year's previous high. He reported especially large enrollment gains by teachers colleges and technological schools, and a much smaller increase in theological schools enrollments.
Among the individual numerical titans of higher education, the University of California leads the field with a total enrollment of more than 40,000 students, and the University of Minnesota follows closely with some 36,000 collegians.
