New Group Will Provide Med School with Income

'Harvard Medical Center, Inc.'

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

An organization which will provide permanent income to support research, teaching, and patient care at the University's three medical schools and seven hospitals has just been chartered by the State. The organization will be called The Harvard Medical Center, Inc.

Primary purposes of the corporation are to solicit and receive contributions from trust funds or unrestricted grants, and to give these toward the "general support or specific undertakings" of the Medical and Dental Schools, and the School of Public Health. It will also aid the seven hospitals and cooperate with others aiding "the purposes of the corporation."

Although the group is organized "exclusively for scientific and educational purposes," it will not refrain from attempts at propaganda and influencing legislation. The corporation's charter states, however, that no "substantial part" of its activities shall be devoted to this end. It is also understood that the corporation will not concern itself with construction of hospitals or schools.

President of the Corporation is Dr. George P. Berry, dean of the Medical School, who has worked on the project since he came to the University after the war. Henry Meadow, assistant dean of the Medical School, has been elected secretary.

Other officers are Ralph Lowell, a trustee of Massachusetts General Hospital, Robert Cutler, chairman of trustees at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, as vice-presidents; and William M. Wolbach, new president of the Children's Medical Center, as treasurer.

President Pusey and Berry are among the eight incorporators of the new organization.
