Varsity Sextet Defeats Princeton In Opening League Contest, 9-1

With its first line involved in all but one goal, the varsity hockey team trounced Princeton before an unusually sparse crowd at the Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton Saturday, 7 to 1. It was the Ivy League opener for both teams.

First line center Bob Cleary collected three goals and four assists, wing Lyle Guttu had two goals and four assists, and wing Paul Kelley contributed a goal and four assists. The other Crimson tallies were by defensemen Bob Owen and Bob McVey.

Guttu tallied the first goal at 0:44 of the opening period, and Owen followed with another less than a minute later. By 6:53 of the period the Crimson led 4 to 0 and was able to coast easily from there.

Princeton scored its lone goal at 6:20 of the second period, when veteran Kim Townsend slipped the puck past Captain Jim Bailey from up close. Bailey was called on to make only 16 saves in the course of the game, and sophomore Harry Pratt, who replaced him in the closing minutes, added four more.

Robinson allowed only one Crimson tally in the second period, which was far more evenly contested than the preceding stanza. But Kelley, Cleary, and Owen added last-period goals to bring the varsity total within one of double figures.

The varsity hockey team will be seeking revenge for its 4-2 upset at the hands of Northeastern late last year when it meets the Huskies at 7 p.m. tonight in the Boston Garden. The freshman sextet meets Boston University on the Watson Rink at 4:30 p.m.
