SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--A bad night for shooting and good night in the nets by A.I.C. goalie Bill Bennett kept the varsity hockey to a narrow 4 to 2 victory here at the Eastern States Colosseum last night.
The Crimson, surprise victims of B.U. Monday because it couldn't get enough shots off at the Terrier goalie, made over 50 attempts last night, but only a few of them really had a chance of getting past the A.I.C. goalie.
The American International College sextet, skating well but depending mostly on hustle, took a 2-0 lead in the first period before the Crimson lines could complete a decent pass play.
Ebby Donaldson scored first for the home team at 4:28 picking up a Crimson clearing pass in front of the nets, and then wing Elvin Beabien followed with the last A.I.C. tally just twenty seconds later.
Actually this was the last real A.I.C. scoring opportunity. In all, Crimson Captain Jim Bailey had to make only 17 saves against Bennetts' official total of 50. After the A.I.C. first-period scores the varsity offense picked up and dominated the play.
Leslie Duncan scored his first goal of the season for the sextet in the second period when he picked up a pass from Maurice Balboni at 8:43 of the period.
After a scoreless middle stanza, Cleary opened the final period by scoring on passes from Paul Kelley and Lyle Guttu at :41. Less than a minute later Cleary netted another after taking a pass from Kelley in back of the goal.
Guttu set up the final goal by stealing the puck at mid-ice and bouncing a shot off Bennett's pads to Kelley who fired it in at 14:30. The game showed that the Crimson was still suffering from the vacation layoff although the playmaking did improve in the late periods.
