Lamont to Stay Open For Summer Weekends

Pre-Exam Weekend Opens Up Library

In preparation for Final Exams, which take place Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week, Lamont Library will be open special hours this weekend. On Friday it will close at 9:30 p.m. instead of the usual 5:30, on Saturday it will be open from 8:45 a.m. until 5:30, and on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 9:30.

In response to many requests made this summer, Lamont Library will probably stay open weekends during next year's Summer School session, William Yandell Elliott, Director of the Summer School, indicated yesterday.

Elliott felt certain that arrangements could be made with the library to obtain adequate staffing for the proposed weekend hours. He explained that such an arrangement had been made in the past, but that at that time there did not appear to be sufficient interest to merit a continuance of the weekend service.

This year, however, student requests have indicated a definite increase in demand for weekend usage, and those interested should be given an opportunity to use Lamont on Saturday and Sunday, Elliott added.

Register Cars

Another change anticipated for next year was revealed by Robert C. Wood, Associate Director of the Summer School, with regard to the parking problem, which has become very acute during the past two summers. While Wood explained that there could be no "basic solution," next summer, Wood said, the administration will require registration of all student cars with the Summer School, and it will also make an effort clearly to delineate the parking problems to all students before they come to Cambridge. Also, special care will be taken to see that those who register and obtain special parking privileges on University property will be assured of parking space.

More Common Rooms

Wood also told the Summer News that the administration hopes to increase the common room facilities next summer. "Anything we can do to increase the opportunities for informal meeting places for social relaxation will help to improve the Summer School," he said.

Looking back over the past seven weeks, both Elliott and Wood felt that the innovations which were made this year have been quite successful. Elliott was especially pleased by the success of the Conference program, which focussed mainly on education this year.

He said that "the best part of these Conferences is that a number of people who know different aspects of the subject are brought together." Wood added that in this atmosphere of informed men, closed sessions and private get-togethers are often the most rewarding part of the Conference.

Like Series with MIT

Wood hailed the Harvard-M.I.T. joint series as the most popular of any event of this type. These poolings of the resourses of the two schools usually drew capacity audiences, he observed, adding: "I hope the program will be continued and possibly expanded next summer."

Both Elliott and Wood praised the Cambridge Drama Festival for adding greatly to the intellectual content of the summer, and also approved of the substantial increase in film, lectures, and conferences.
