Bob Kessler, who held Yale hitless for four innings in relief last month, will probably hurl for the Crimson this afternoon when the nine meets Yale at 3:15 on Soldiers Field. Kessler will be trying to even the rivalry for the year.
Early power hitting brought Yale a 5-3 victory in New Haven in May, but Kessler's tricky southpaw slants baffled the Elis. Kessler, who edged Amherst 3 to 2 last Saturday, will be seeking his third win in a week, after beating Boston College last Wednesday. With Captain Ken Rossano probably out for the season with a broken thumb on his glove hand, senior Kessler figures to hurl the Crimson's last two games as well, against Yale today and Monday.
If the Crimson stop the Elis' Ken MacKenzie, who beat them this May and twice last spring, the team's record will be 18 and 4 on the year, with a chance to make it 19 wins next week. But the overall series record with Yale still won't be even, for the Bulldog has 116 triumphs to his credit against the Crimson's 100.
Kessler's best pitches are a slow ball and a slight curve, but control is his main strength. He was ninth in ERA among Eastern League pitchers this spring.
Senior Bing Crosby is expected to catch Kessler in the final home appearance for each man, but the rest of the starters will be back. Sophomore Tom Bergantino, a fine glove man showing power hitting recently. will lead off and play third base.
Members of the Class of 1931 and their sons will form before Eliot House at 1:30 p.m. for the march to Soldiers Field. Wives and daughters will proceed separately to a reserved grandstand section.
Undergraduates should present their athletic participation cards to the H.A.A. office, 60 Boylston St., this morning for tickets to the game.
