Varsity Faces Brandeis Today; Kessler Will Pitch for Crimson

The battered varsity nine will attempt today to salvage one prize out of what has been a mediocre season. If the Crimson can beat Brandeis this afternoon on Soldiers Field and B.C. on June 6, it will win the Greater Boston League Championship for the second year in a row. The Judges should provide willing salve for the varsity's wounds.

Maurice Stein, a fast left hander, will start for Brandeis this afternon. Stein gave the Judges their one moment of glory this year when he beat Northeastern 5 to 0 on one hit.

Bob Kessler, who pitched three hitless innings against Yale last Saturday, will be the starting pitcher for the Crimson. Last year, Kessler was the winning pitcher in relief as the varsity trounced Brandeis 13 to 6.

Brandeis to date has been the doormat of the G.B.L. with a season's record of 2 and 11. Defensively, the team has been weak all year, and with the exception of Stein's performance against Northeastern, the pitching has been at a low ebb. Catcher and captain Dick Cunningham has been the only consistent hitter.

Coach Norm Shapard said that he definitely plans to start Dick Fisher in left field today. Fisher, who is hitting .444, was scheduled to start against Yale, but only appeared as a pinch-hitter. Bing Crosby will start behind the plate, while John Simourian, Bob Cleary, Bob Hastings, and Tom Bergantino will round out the infield. Walt Stahura, Fisher, and Matt Botsford will start in the outfield.
