Harvard Still On Track To Reach Fossil Fuel-Neutral Status by 2026, Sustainability Report Finds
Harvard, the indoor Heptagonal Track champions, will go into the outdoor Heps at West Point tomorrow afternoon rated no better than third among the ten entrants.
Cornell, who last week soundly trounced the varsity, will rank as favorites. Army is expected to place second. Third place should be a toss-up between Yale, Dartmouth, and the varsity.
Al Wills and French Anderson will not run for the Crimson. Indoors, they finished second and third in the 600 and ran two legs of the victorious mile-relay team. In addition, the nature of the outdoor meet, as compared to the winter Heps, makes the Crimson's chances of a victory slimmer. Indoors, there was one dash and one hurdles race and the Crimson did not place in either. Outdoors, there are two of each.
All is not black, however. Pete Reider, indoor two-mile champion, will probably win outdoors, although Dartmouth's Doug Brew and Army's Lou Quantannens might provide keen competition.
Captain Art Siler is defending discus champion, but Yale's Dick Winterbauer has been matching his distances most of the season. Siler also ranks high among the shotputters.
Jim Cairns, indoor 1000 champion, could run off with the 880 crown, although either Brew or Dick Schar, also of Dartmouth, could win.
Another possible Crimson winner is Dick Wharton in the 440, although his competition will be tough. He placed third last Saturday behind Cornell's John Ingley and Johnny Haines of Penn.
Other possible Crimson point-producers are Pete Harpel in the hammer, miler Phil Williams, Ed Carter in the low hurdles, Norm Bruck in the dashes, Dave Norris in the two-mile, and Chris Angermeyer in the javelin.
