Nine Travels to Oppose Yale; Tennis Tourney Starts Today

Fourteen teams from all over New England arrived here yesterday to compete in the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament. The draw was held last night, and play will begin at 9 a.m. this morning, lasting through Sunday.

The three days' matches will be of special interest on the Harvard scene, as they should provide an excellent preview of Monday's match with Yale. Both the Crimson and the Elis have two seeded men in the event.

Top seeded will be Eric Moore, number one player from Yale. He will be followed by Wally Jensen of Williams and Harvard's Dale Junta and Brooks Harris. These top four seeds should receive a lot of competition from the bottom six ranked players, since according to the coaches' opinions, the draw is unusually tight this year.

5th-10th Singles

At fifth through tenth singles will be B.U.'s Sheldon Caldwell and Tom Kerr, Middlebury's Pete Bostwick, Yale's Ed Meyer, Brown's George Kirkpatrick, and Amherst's Dave Hicks. Both of last year's finalists, Williams' Bill Cullen, the winner, and Brown's Doc Houk, have graduated from the collegiate ranks.

All the seeded players drew first round byes, putting them automatically into the second round of the six-round tourney. The other two Crimson players, Steve Gottlieb and Ben Heckscher, will see first round action. Gottlieb faces B.U.'s Ray Keaney, while Heckscher opposes Connecticut's Jay Cobbledick in the opening round.

In the doubles division, the varsity's top team of Junta and Harris was named first seeded team. They are followed by the Yale number one duo, Moore and Meyer, Williams' first team of Jensen and Dave Leonard, and Amherst's Hicks and Bud Hostetter. The doubles play will begin this afternoon.

All Draw Byes

As in the single draw, all the seeded teams drew first round byes, thus moving Junta and Harris into the second round automatically. The other Crimson team of Heckscher and Cal Place will oppose Joe McOwen and Larry Block of Holy Cross in the opening round.

If the weatherman holds some good weather over the weekend, the tournament committee, headed by Crimson coach Jack Barnaby, hopes that two rounds of singles will be played each day, the finals and semi-finals coming on Sunday. One round of doubles is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with the semis and finals finishing Sunday.
