For the varsity baseball team, trouble never seems to come in one big dose. One day the hitting may be bad, while another day the fielding may be lax. Still, the pitching holds steady. Yesterday, both the hitting and the fielding were miserable, but nevertheless the Crimson wobbled to a 4-2 victory over Brown.
Dom Repetto, the varsity hurler, was fairly effective for the eight innings he worked, giving up six hits and only one walk. Bob Kessler relieved Repetto in the eighth inning and went the rest of the way. Their teammates, however, offered them little support, erring four times in the field and mustering only four hits at the plate.
Brown's pitcher, Bruce Bartsch, kept the Crimson batters under his thumb, but he could not control his own wildness, issuing seven walks and hitting two batters.
The Bruins scored first in the fourth inning when, after two outs, Pinch singled. He then advanced to third on catcher Bing Crosby's wild throw to second, and finally scored on Bob Hastings' error. The varsity countered with two runs in the same inning as John Getch led off with a single and moved to second when Walt Stahura was hit by Bartsch. Both runners then scored when the Bruin left fielder dropped Stu Levine's long fly.
The varsity added two more in the sixth on walks to Stahura and Bing Crosby, a sacrifice by Repetto, a wild pitch, and a long fly from the bat of Bob Cleary. Brown scored once in the eighth on three singles, but Kessler relieved and put out the fire.
Botsford took over in left field for injured Dick Fisher.
