To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

I write in regard to a letter, printed in the CRIMSON of March 3, from Joseph I. Arnold, Ph.D. '34, criticizing President Pusey's "policy of filling the Divinity School Faculty with 'committed men.'" Arnold's conception of "commitment" is fuzzy indeed. He is also blind to the fact that one can be committed, and yet not view such a commitment as a narrow "sectarian mold."

Mr. Arnold fears that Mr. Pusey's policy wil lead to the "sacrificing of Veritas on the altar of sectarianism." But has he not been told that the present Divinity Faculty is made up of representatives from at least eight Protestant denominations, as well as from Eastern Orthodoxy and Judaism? Is this what Arnold means by "sectarianism"? Certainly, no Divinity faculty in Harvard's past ever has had such breadth.

Moreover, in Mr. Arnold's concern for Veritas, has he not forgotten that in Harvard's seal (itself a matter of no little controversy), Veritas is encircled by the words "Christo et Ecclesiae" Donald Kocher grDv.
