Elis Defeat Varsity Five, 82-69, Withstand Closing Crimson Rally

Inability to score from the free throw line cost the varsity basketball team a win over Yale Saturday night. In a game which at times looked like little more than a foul shooting contest, the Elis won, 82 to 69, before 700 bored onlookers at the I.A.B. Chuck Ross and John Lee paced the scoring with 20 and 18 points.

Forty-eight personals were called on the two teams, the Crimson committing 25, their New Haven rivals 23, and Yale was considerably more accurate on the free throw line. While the varsity was missing 16 or 31 attempts, the Elis converted 32 of their 42 chances.

Between trips to the free throw line, however, the varsity played competent, and, on a few occasions, excellent basketball. Only during the final five minutes of the first half was the home team badly outplayed.

Cut Eli Margin

This sudden spurt put Yale ahead, 46 to 28, at the half. Harvard slowly cut the Eli margin during the second half, but never could get closer than six points. In the final minutes, slow and deliberate play by Yale forced the varsity into several fouls, all of which were quickly converted into points by the accurate Elis. In the last six minutes the winners scored only one field goal, but made 14 straight free throw attempts to clinch the game.

For the varsity, Lou Lowenfels, Ike Canty and Captain Warren Kantrowitz all merit mention. Lowenfels paced a second half rally with nine points. Canty passed off neatly, and Kantrowitz was high scorer with 19 points.

Behind Kantrowitz in total points were Lowenfels and Hurley with 11 and Hastings with ten. Canty scored nine.
