Rhinelander to Head Stanford Department

The appointment of Philip H. Rhinelander '29, former Director of General Education, as dean of the Stanford University School of Humanities and Sciences, was confirmed yesterday by Stanford president Walace Sterling.

Rhinelander, who is in England on leave from the Harvard department of Philosophy, is expected to take up his duties early in June as head of the largest academic unit at Stanford.

Rhinelander, the third head of General Education, was succeeded last May by Kenneth B. Murdock '16, Francis Lee Higginson Professor of English Literature. Rhinelander headed the program for three years and gave one of the elementary courses, Humanities 4.
