The varsity basketball team named Robert D. Canty captain for the 1956-57 season last night and also selected him as this year's Most Valuable Player. Lou Lowenfels received the award for free throw shooting, and Captain Warren Kantrowitz was cited as the Most Improved Player.
Canty, a Leverett House junior, was high scorer in his freshman year. The six-foot-three center played two seasons on the Arlington High School basketball team before coming to Harvard. At Arlington, he set a school record for high scoring, and was named both seasons to his league's all-star team.
Kantrowitz has played basketball during all four years at the University. He was captain of his freshman team. Prior to college, he played for Natick High School, where he was captain and highest scorer in the league.
