Age Cards Planned For Liquor Buyers

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Students over 21 will be able to receive identification cards from the city clerk, according to a measure passed by the State House of Representatives and sent to the Senate yesterday.

The new law, if adopted, will help bartenders and liquor store operators in determining whether the customer is over 21, Senator Richard H. Lee, chairman of the Joint Legal Affairs Committee said.

Bartenders can be prosecuted even though they do not know that their customers are minors, Lee explained. But a misrepresentation of age, he added, is also liable to punishment.

"Young people of both sexes over 21 would be encouraged to use the cards when buying alcohol," Lee stated.
