Direct commissions in the Regular Army are available to men who have a Master's or Doctor's Degree in any technical specialty listed as critical by the Department of the Army, Governors Island Headquarters has announced.
Most of the critical job classifications are in the fields of engineering and physics.
Candidates with only a Bachelor's degree, but with at least three years of practical experience in an appropriate field may request a waiver of the graduate degree qualification.
Listings of other critical fields are available at Army installations or recruiting offices. The program is open to both civilian and military personnel.
Six Branches Open
Qualified specialists who meet the general eligibility requirements of the Army's regulations may request appointment in the following branches: Chemical, Ordnance, Quartermaster, Signal, Transportation, or Corps of Engineers.
Officers receiving Regular Army commissions must serve a minimum of three years on active duty and six years in the reserves.
The shortage of technicians includes the engineering categories of chemical, chemical research, civil, communications, electrical, electronics, highway traffic, marine, metallurgical, petroleum, radio, and textile.
All types of specialists in physics, as well as hipolymer chemistry, entomology, climatology, geography, meteorology, naval architecture, and motion picture production are also qualified, as are those in aerodynamics, food technology, automotive engineering, nutrition, photography, refrigeration, air conditioning and heat engineering.
