Varsity Sextet Beats Boston University As Second Period Goals Mark 6-1 Win

For a period at the Garden last night, the varsity hockey team seemed intent on losing its Beanpot title in the opening round of the annual tourney.

The Crimson led a weak Boston University team, playing without goalie Ralph Vito and captain Jack Murphy, by only 2 to 1 at the end of the first period. Three second-period goals, however, and sharper pass work enabled the varsity to win going away, 6 to 1. It will face Boston College for the local championship Wednesday night.

The win reversed an earlier 5-4 defeat by the Terriers in overtime and brought the Crimson's season record up to 8-7, above .500 for the first time since early December.

Sharpness Lacking

The second period was actually the only well-played part of an otherwise dull game. The sharp passing and good play making that featured the varsity's 10-1 slaughter of Dartmouth last Saturday seemed to be missing in the first and last periods. In the first, particularly, the var- sity was unable to organize and clear the puck out of its own zone.

Captain Charley Flynn played another fine game in the goal, especially in the second stanza when he made three sensational saves in a row on B.U. shots from close in. Jim Bailey also looked good in shutting out the Terriers over the last half of the final period.

Junior Terry O'Malley played his first full game since December at right wing on a line with Dan Ullyot and Bob Owen. Coach Cooney Weiland in turn moved Joe Crehore down to center the third line with Derick Nicholas and Albie Wells.

Ullyot opened the scoring with a 15-foot shot into the lower left corner at 5:05 of the first period, as he skated in uncovered on the right and took a pass from Owen. The Terriers tied the game eight minutes later on Art Carriere's shot over Flynn's shoulder.

Owen made one of the best plays of the night when he stole the puck at mid-ice, raced around the defense, and tallied through Levin's feet at 11:13. Crehore scored the fifth goal six minutes later, and Dave Holmes, playing for Nicholas when the latter was cut above the eye, converted John Copeland's long shot at 12:20 of the final period.

The Freshman hockey team, undefeated in its nine games, will play Malden Catholic on the Watson Rink at 4 p.m. today
