Tonight's varsity hockey game against Northeastern at 8 p.m. at the Watson Rink has taken on unexpected significance now that the Crimson is definitely in contention for a Colorado invitation. A loss, or even a close score, could be fatal to the varsity's chances.
With only two good hockey players--veteran goalie Bill Lawn and wing Fred Vorderer--the Huskies have had a bad season. They even lost to Dartmouth, the doormat of the Ivy League, 5 to 4.
The varsity beat Northeastern, 8 to 3, in its opening game of the season and has been improving steadily since then. Coach Cooney Weiland noted the improvement yesterday, remarking that the Crimson now "is the best team around here."
The Crimson is currently pointing to the first of two games with Yale in New Haven on Saturday, since one win over the Elis will clinch the Ivy League championship for the third straight year. The varsity's League record is 5-0. and second-place Yale's is 4-2.
Weiland plans to use a completely new third line combination tonight. Dave Beadie centers the line for John Hamlen and Dick Allen, and Weiland expects to be able to play it regularly.
Terry O'Malley will skate as right wing on a line with Bob McVey and Bob Owen, as he has for the past few games. Captain Charlie Flynn will start in the goal as usual, but Jim Bailey will probably also see action.
