WILLIAMSTOWN--The varsity squash team ran into stiff competition yesterday afternoon against the Williams team, which previously had defeated Yale and lost a close decision to Navy. Every match except for Larry Sears' 3-0 win over Tom Shulman involved more than three games as the Crimson won 7 to 2 for their ninth straight victory.
After the match the squad left for West Point to face a perennially strong Army team. The varsity will be favored, since the Cadets only beat Williams by a 6-3 score. Coach Jack Barnaby, however, pointed out that comparative scores do not tell the whole story. Army will be "our toughest match of the year and should get us set for Yale," he said.
At first singles Ben Heckscher defeated sophomore Oliver Stafford 15-9, 6-15, 15-9, 15-12. In the second position Cal Place had difficulty handling the crushing service of Mike Wood, but managed to pull out a 15-11, 4-15, 18-14, 18-14 victory.
Williams gained its two wins at the fourth and seventh positions. Crimson captain Pete Milton dropped the longest match of the day to Rogers Southall at number four, 13-16, 15-8, 13-15, 18-14, 18-16. Seventh man Roger Cortesi lost to Dick Ennis 13-15, 15-13, 15-13, 17-16.
Martin Heckscher and Lanny Thomas both won 3-1 matches with little difficulty to complete the Crimson scoring.
