Providence Sextet Breaks '59 Streak

A strong Providence College sextet scored four first-period goals against the Freshman Hockey team yesterday at Watson rink and then hung on through the rest of the game to win, 4 to 2. The loss snapped the Crimson's winning streak at fifteen games.

The Yardlings dominated the game in the second period as Dick Reilly and Maurice Balboni tallied to bring the score up to 4 to 2. This ended the scoring as the Friars effectively tightened their defense, and turned back numerous third-period rushes by the Crimson.

Providence controlled the action toward the end of the final period and only fine play by Goalie Dick Cleary kept the Friars from increasing their lead. The game was marred by numerous penalties and towards the end of the last period, several fights broke out among the players.

The Yardlings face an equally imposing opponent this Saturday when they meet Boston College in the Boston Arena at 7 p.m. In their last meeting on Dec. 16, the Freshman had to come from behind to win, 6 to 5. Tony Marlowe, now out with a sprained ankle, was the high scorer with three goals.

If the Freshmen are to equal the records of the last three Yardling sextets, they must win the remainder of their games. The '56, '57, and '58 teams lost only one game apiece.
