For the first time in many years, Claverly Hall will not take students from all of the seven Houses next year, Dean Watson announced yesterday.
In a move designed to unify the House groups, Watson said students from Dunster, Leverett, Lowell, and Winthrop would move to Wigglesworth, Adams, Eliot, and Kirkland will remain in Claverly. Such widespread "annexes" as the Business School and Apley Court, will no longer be used, nor will recently acquired 8 Prescott St., he added.
Instead, the new plan calls for housing about 176 students in all but the A entry of Wigglesworth, which will continue to be used by the Freshmen.
Increased overcrowding and the resultant far-flung distribution of excess students necessitated the change, it is believed. But even under the new scheme, the University will be overcrowded by 47 percent of its normal occupancy, Watson pointed out.
"We are mainly trying to provide the outsiders with more of a House atmosphere," Gordon M. Fair, Master of Dunster House explained. "If we bring them together in one place they will have more of a sense of belonging to a unit, and we will be able to provide them with a resident tutor," he said.
All of the Masters expressed approval of the new arrangement. "Since there are too many students living out to be housed completely in Claverly, it seems silly to split them up," Elliott Perkins '23, Master of Lowell, agreed.
Although the distance between Wigglesworth and most of the Houses would seem to provide outsiders with a prohibitively long walk to the dining room, Watson said that no definite meal arrangements for next year have been made.
