Varsity Sextet Beats Tufts, 16-1, As Guttu, Cleary Lead Scorers

With two seven-goal splurges in the first and last periods, the varsity hockey team overwhelmed a hapless Tufts sextet 16-1 yesterday at Watson Rink. Center Bob Cleary led the Crimson scoring with three goals and four assists.

Tufts was unable to maintain any organized defense and the varsity, except for a second-period lapse, scored almost at will. The victory was the Crimson's eighth in their last nine games, bringing their season's record to 11-8.

Bob Owen opened the Crimson scoring at 3:31 of the first period on passes from Terry O'Malley and Bob McVey, and Joe Crehore made it 2-0 for the Crimson as he broke away at center ice, scoring at 4:22. Lyle Guttu and O'Malley added two more goals to bring the score to 4-0. Guttu then pounded home a hat trick in the space of 90 seconds, as Cleary assisted in all three goals.

Crehore and Cleary both scored again to bring the score to 9-0 and with the beginning of the third period, the Tufts defense collapsed completely. In the avalanche that followed, Cleary and McVey each tallied twice, as Owen, Denny Little, and Art Noyes added single goals.

The Crimson's goalies only made a total of 16 saves during the game, compared to Tufts's 49. Dave Phalen, Tufts's first goalie obtained 17 of these and Dave Wilson received credit for the other 32.
