Council Will Hear 'Meddling' Case; HYRC President Refutes Charges

The accusations leveled against John R. Thomson '57, president of the Harvard Young Republican Club, for his alleged attempts to subvert the Political Forum will receive a formal hearing at the Student Council's Monday meeting, it was learned last night.

Council President Edward M. Abramson '57, revealing that his group has held informal investigations into the controversy, said the Council will consider a petition submitted by William C. Brady '57, former president of the Harvard Conservative Club.

In his petition, Brady, obviously attacking both the HYRC and the Harvard Conservative League, asked for future Dean's Office action against any organization which "shall attempt to deprive another of its speakers."

Last night Brady said he was specifically basing this petition on an attempt by the Conservative League to dissuade Rep. Harold H. Velde from addressing his group in November, and Thomson's admitted urging of Senator John Bricker not to address the Forum, as well as his alleged influence in helping cause Senator Styles Bridges to cancel his Forum talk.

Brady Asks Action

In his petition, Brady said, "In view of certain attempts during this academic year to deprive some undergraduate organizations of their speakers, and generally, to interfere with their activities in the College, I hereby petition the Student Council to recommend a course of action to the Dean's Office at the earliest possible occasion to prevent any recurrences of such actions."

The Dean's Office has maintained an official silence on the whole matter.

It was indicated last night that the Council may hold informal hearings into the controversy this week with all the principals--the Forum members and the HYRC--being invited.
