HANOVER, N.H., Feb. 18--The 300 medley relay team of Pete Macky, Dave Hawkins, and Chouteau Dyer opened with a Dartmouth pool and Harvard record of 2:52.4 and the varsity swimmers were never headed as they scored a convincing 47-37 win over Dartmouth today.
In the next event, the 220 freestyle, Jim Jorgensen continued the record-setting as he defeated Dartmouth ace Ernie Drosdick. Although Drosdick had done a 2:10.9 earlier in the season, he was unable to withstand the terrific pace set by the Crimson captain and cracked on the final lap. Jorgensen's time of 2:08.0 broke the old pool record of 2:08.6 set by John Marshal of Yale.
Jorgensen also scored an impressive 4:46.8 victory in the 440 over Dartmouth captain Duke Hust. Hust, who still holds the Dartmouth record for the distance, couldn't equal Jorgensen's steady pace and had to sprint continually to regain lost ground. When Jorgensen sprinted at the end, however, Hust dropped out of contention.
Dave Hawkins and Chouteau Dyer contributed their usual victories. Hawkins took the individual medley in 2:19.7 and the breaststroke in 2:34.8, while Dyer added to Drosdick's frustration by beating him in the 100 freestyle.
Although the medley relay time shaved 1.1 seconds off the old Dartmouth pool record set by Yale in 1952, the Elis have an excellent chance of re-establishing their supremacy when they visit Hanover next week. Against Navy today their medley relay team turned in an impressive 2:48.3 clocking.
