The College's Army ROTC until will hold summer camp at Ft. Devens, Mass., instead of Ft. Sill, Okla., its previous base, it was learned yesterday.
The change has been prompted by the redesignation of the cadet battalion from Artillery to General Military Science.
While the unit may not be permanently assigned to Ft. Devens, it will be always connected with a First Army base, located in New England, New York, or New Jersey.
Since many of the unit's members live in the East, the camp relocation will save the Defense Department much of the annual $12,000 transportation expenses. When the unit trained at Fort Sill, an average of $200 was given to each of approximately 60 juniors.
More College Influence
Training should improve in a First Army area post, Col. Trevor N. Dupuy, professor of Military Science, said yesterday. "When the camp is in our own army area, we can have more influence on the training, and see that it is tailored more closely to the college background of our students."
Weekend leaves will depend on the policy of the camp commander, Dupuy siad. "Other camps have been liberal in the past, but I do not know what the situation at Devens will be."
The camp will open on June 23 and continue through August 3.
In line with the change of training camps this summer, the emphasis of the military curriculum in the College next fall with change from Artillery to General Military.
