Crimson Meets Tigers, Lions In Weekend Cage Contests

Ivy League Spoiler?

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The toughest weekend of the season begins for the basketball team at 8:30 tonight when Floyd Wilson's five opposes Princeton at the Blockhouse. Tomorrow the opposition will be Columbia, currently leading the Ivy League with a record of five wins and one loss, after last night's 71-70 upset loss to Dartmouth.

Tonight's game against second-place Princeton, 3-1 in the League and 7-7 overall, affords the better chance for a Crimson victory. While Cappy Cappon's five is probably the the highest-scoring outfit in Tiger history, it has lost seven times this year, and the Crimson will be up for the game, hoping to send the Tigers down again.

What has shaped up as the regular starting five for the home team will open again tonight. High scorer Ike Canty and Phil Haughey will work under the boards, and Bob Hastings, Dick Hurley and Bill Riggs will bring the ball up. Al Lubetkin, like Riggs a product of the House league, may see quite a bit of action, as the five tries to halt a team with five starters averaging 12 or more points per game.

Tiger Starters

The high scorer for Princeton, one of the top teams in the nation in floor and free throw accuracy, is captain John DeVoe, with a 15.8 average. Sophomore Dave Fulcomer, tallest starter, 6-6, averages 14.7, and Don Davidson, Ken MacKenzie and Fred Perkins all top 12. The Princeton offense is based on the "Princeton weave," a maneuver which works the ball in for close shots.

Columbia is more than just Chet Forte this year. The 5-9 sophomore still leads the Ivy League in scoring with more than 24 points per game, but 6-4 captain Frank Thomas grabs about 16 rebounds per game, and Ted Dwyer and Lou Lehner have come along quickly this season. The Lion attack features the fast break, and consistently good shooting.

Crimson chances for a win in one of these games are rather nebulous. On the record, the home team will be the underdog in each encounter.
