Council Votes Building For Theatre, Activities

Will Be Available to All Groups

By Peter V. Shackter

The Student Council voted last night in its final meeting of the term for the University to build a combined theatre and student activities building.

The group will present the recommendation, based upon a report on facilities for extra-curricular activities to the administration sometime this week. At the same meeting, the Council also decided on the recommended charities which the Combined Charities drive will solicit this February.

As the Council approved it, the new building will contain a theatre that will hold about 500, and will be available to any undergraduate dramatic group that wants it. Beneath the theatre will be a rehearsal room the full size of the theatrical stage, a make-up room, a dressing room, and two music rehearsal rooms.

The floor above the theatre will contain about 18 offices which will be assigned to undergraduate organizations who apply for them by Dean Watson and the Council. There will also be two general conference rooms on the top floor.

In presenting the report to the Council, Larry R. Johnson '58 said that the plans for the building were minimal, rather than maximal. He said his committee had initially favored the inclusion of a smaller experimental theater, but that this proposal had not met with the approval of University officials. After Council discussion, however, it was informally decided to include the small theatre in the recommendation.

Voting on the form of the Combined Charities pledge cards, the Council ratified the proposal submitted by co-chairmen Michael N. Butler '57 and Gregory B. Stone '58, which put PBH, the Salzburg Seminar, American Field Service, and World University Service on the suggested list.
