A powerful running attack and excellent end play brought Yale the Ivy League championship this afternoon in the stadium as the Elis defeated Harvard for the 42nd time. Dean Loucks directed the Eli attack expertly, calling on Al Ward, Dennis McGill, and Steve Ackerman for hard rushing, while ends Vern Loucks and Paul Lopata excelled on offense and defense.
In the first half the Yale line had shoved Harvard all over the field, not completely preventing first downs, but holding the Crimson to 95 yards on the ground and 23 in the air, while setting up the Blue backs for 174 yards rushing and 54 passing.
FIRST PERIOD
Phil Haughey kicked off for Harvard, and Al Ward of Yale ran the ball back from the 22 to the 30. Yale failed to advance in three plays. Vern Loucks punted out of bounds on the 50, but Harvard gave up the ball on the Yale 41.
The Elis swept quickly for a touchdown on eight plays with a two-yard plunge by Dennis McGill capping the drive at 7:04. Ackerman had opened the drive by running off left tackle to the 49, and then Dean Loucks passed to Vern Loucks on the 23. Two incomplete passes followed, and then Dean Loucks hit McGill with a flat pass, and he went out on the 11. Ackerman ran five, and then McGill went to the two before crashing over. Vern Loucks kicked the point.
Harvard got nowhere with the next kickoff, and Matt Botsford quick-kicked into the end zone on the third down from his 39. Ackerman fumbled on the first Yale play and Marv Lebovitz recovered on the 19, but the Yale line stiffened and forced Harvard back to the 27 before taking the ball on downs.
McGill ran 27 yards to the Crimson 46 and then Ackerman went 30 more to the 16. But Dean Loucks fumbled three plays later on a jarring tackle by Lebovitz, and Harvard had the ball on the 30 at the quarter.
SECOND PERIOD
Gianelly and Simourian ran for Harvard's first two downs as the second period began, but Harvard got no further than the 46. Botsford then punted to the Eli five and Ward took it up to the eight.
Ward ran around right end to the 21, then plunged for another yard. Dennis McGill took a pitchout from Dick Winter bauer and went 78 yards through a broken field for the Elis' second touchdown. Botsford had a good shot at him on the Harvard 30, but McGill turned inside and raced the rest of the way. Vern Loucks kicked the point that made it Yale 14, Harvard 0 at 5:02.
Harvard retaliated with its first score less than two minutes later. Vic McLaughlin ran the kickoff back 18 yards to the 34, and then Sandy Dodge ran right end to the 49. Two plays later Jim Joslin ran 39 yards over left tackle and converted at 6:51.
But Ward took the next kickoff all the way, dancing down the right sideline for 69 yards. Vern Loucks converted again, to make it 21-7. The Yale line continued to push Harvard around, and Botsford, badly rushed, threw a wild pass that Ackerman intercepted on the 35. Yale scored in six plays, with Ackerman taking a 13 yard pass alone on the six and running over. Vern Loucks' conversion made it 28-7 at the half.
THIRD PERIOD
Yale had a scoring opportunity early in the third quarter, as Simourian fumbled the kickoff after returning it to the 39. McGill recovered, but Woody Harris and Bob Shaunessy rushed the Elis, and Vern Loucks punted into the end zone.
Harvard registered first downs on the next two plays. Stahura fought his way for 10 yards over tackle. Simourian completed a pass to Joslin for 17 yards on the 47, but a few plays later Damis punted to the 10. Gianelli intercepted a Dean Loucks' pass on the next play. Two runs by Simourian pushed the ball from the 26 to the three. Yale held for three plays, but Simourian ran over on the fourth down at 9:20. Joslin converted.
A personal foul penalty helped stop the Yale attack after the kickoff, and the teams exchanged midfield fumbles. The Yale end dumped Simourian for a 14-yard loss on his 30 at the end of the period.
FOURTH PERIOD
Ward went 30 yards returning a Botsford punt to the Crimson 38 as the final period opened. Ward and Lorch advanced the ball to the nine and then Dick Winterbauer threw a wobbly pass to Paul Lopata, who caught it with Joslin on his back in the end zone. Vern Loucks converted to make it 35-14.
The game turned rough in the closing minutes, with personal fouls and clipping penalties against each team. McLaughin advanced Harvard into Yale territory after the kickoff but the offense stalled.
But then Winterbauer threw complete to Hallek for a first down on the Crimson 23 and to Mike Cavalon on the 6. Three plays later Hallek broke over from the two, and when Hallek caught a pass in the end zone from Budge Henkel, Yale had the extra point.
