Soccer Defense Accounts For 2-1 Win Over Tigers

A usually porous defense was tightened considerably Saturday as the Crimson soccer team snapped a six-game losing streak at Princeton, 2 to 1. The win was the varsity first in the lvy League, and third of the season.

Captain Grey Hodnett was the defensive star for the Crimson, while alternating at center halfback and center for-ward. Left fullback Chris Provenson turned in his best performance of the year.

The Crimson offensive, although slow-starting, was generally good throughout the game. Passes were shorter and much more accurate than in previous losses, but the line failed to get away many shots on the Tiger goal.

The first period started slowly, but the Harvard line began to press the attack with accurate, timely passing. Center forward Jim Shue put away a beautiful pass from Ken McIntosh at 16:15 of the second period to give Harvard a 1-0 lead.

Inside left Tom Bernheim increased the lead to 2-0 on a perfect head-in, after taking a pass from outside left Robin Magowan. John Adams scored the lone Tiger goal five minutes later on a direct kick, awarded after a penalty call against Beaver.

The varsity meets Brown Saturday morning in the season semi-final and an attempt to emerge from the Ivy cellar.
