Yardlings Take Soccer Contest

A disputed goal, scored only one-half second before the end of the first half, gave the freshman soccer team a 2 to 1 victory over Nichols Junior College yesterday. The referee questioned whether Al Butzel's goal was completed before the timekeeper fired his gun, but decided in the Yardlings' favor.

Midway through the first period, George Herrick took a pass from John Hedreen to tally the Yardling's first point. Nichols' score by Andy Fisher came in the second quarter.

A strong freshman backfield abandoned their unsuccessful long kicks after the first quarter, settling down to short, sharp passes with the ball tightly under control. Although they threatened to increase their lead several times in the second half, a weak line foiled their hopes.

Coach Dana Getchell complimented the Freshman passing attack, but emphasized a need for better teamwork. He praised Hedreen's passes and a generally well-organized defense, but criticized the line for failing to follow up on the goals.
