LINING THEM UP

'It's a Grab Bag'

By Jerome A. Chadwick

"It's a grab bag," was all Coach Dana Getchell would say about his lineup. And indeed, all Getchell knows about his freshman soccer squad is that at present it contains roughly 25 players. Getchell's starting lineup for today's opener with an experienced Exeter squad is not even tentative--it doesn't exist. "I don't think I'll even know until the game starts," he adds, just to clarify the situation.

Exeter, sprinkled with veterans, has won two of three this year, one from the Tufts freshmen, 3 to 1. The Exonians also have a 3-1 win over Belmont High School and an 0-1 loss to Yale's freshman team behind them. As Getchell put it, "the low scores indicate a good, solid defense." The win over Tufts also showed a fast, well-knit line.

The New Hampshire boys' school, traditionally strong against the Crimson, uses the same short passing game which varsity coach Munro and Getchell use here. Although emphasis is on the attack, Exeter's defense and goal-tending is also expected to be strong.

Getchell's bright spots seem to be at fullback and goal. He is presently working with Langley Keyes, "Snick" Wilson, and John Harbison at the fullback posts but the starters are uncertain. At goal he is blessed with first stringers from both Andover and Exeter--Tom Bagnoli and John Saxe, respectively. Bagnoli's ankle was hurt in yesterday's practice, but he should be ready to go this afternoon.

Plans Indefinite

Eight forwards divide Getchell's attention, but only five will start today. Harvey Mazer, George Herrick, Billy Wexler, John Himmelhoch, John Mudd, Al Bretzel, John Hedreen, and Nick Lamont are all battling for the starting positions, but they won't know "until the game starts."

At halfback, Getchell has Pete Erskine, Bill Rapp, Charlie Steele, Pete Niebyl, Tom Gleason, and John Freeman contending for three starting posts. Full-back Dale Fruman and linemen Jay Draper, Dick Emrich, Joe Pelligrino, Mike Falk, and "Doc" Bennett also figure in Getchell's plans, but he's not sure where.

Good Physical Shape

The squad is in good physical shape, and Getchell did not risk injuries in yesterday's light workout. The emphasis was on fundamentals, especially kicking and passing. The line started practice on a faltering note, but ended the drill with a little more confidence and much more accurate passing. The fullbacks were strong throughout the session, and the goalies also were sharp.
