Rugby Club Wins Official Approval Of Proposed Jaunt to West Coast

The Crimson's intercollegiate champion rugby team may become the first Harvard squad to visit the West Coast in nearly seven years, if plans to play in California next April are confirmed.

The last major obstacle to the Club's acceptance of the University of California's invitation was removed yesterday, as the Administrative Board voted its approval of the trip. The last Crimson visit to California was in September, 1949, when the football team opened its season at Stanford, losing 44 to 0.

"At this point, our chances of making the trip look excellent," Arthur W. Ticknor '56, president of the Rugby Club, said last night. Current plans call for the ruggers to play two games in Berkeley on Friday and Sunday, April 20 and 22.

Although the Administration has approved a two-day class absence for all undergraduates on the team, its refusal to grant an extra day has forced a change in the original Saturday and Monday schedule.

The University of California has agreed to provide the ruggers with free room, board, and medical attention during their stay. It has also pledged a minimum of $2,700 towards the team's travelling expenses. This money will come from ticket sales and a covering guarantee from the California branch of the Harvard Alumni Association.
