Jordan Closes Drill to Visitors, Will Not Discuss 2nd Backfield

The security screen at Soldiers Field, ordinarily penetrable until Yale game time, fell briefly yesterday, as the varsity football team ran through its last full-scale practice before Saturday's opener against the University of Massachusetts.

For although daily practices are restricted to authorized spectators, Coach Lloyd Jordan rarely closes practice completely until the week preceding the Yale game.

Yesterday, however, following an hour of open workout, Jordan moved the team to the Stadium, where all visitors were barred--apparently in order to experiment with backfield combinations away from the press.

Jordan, Wednesday announced his starting backfield--Leo Daley, quarterback; Matt Botsford, tailback; John Simourian, wingback; and Tony Gianelly, fullback; but was still noncommital concerning the nature of his second backfield.

"All I can say is that Joe Crehore (quarterback) and Dick Oehmler (fullback) will be there," he said last night.

This leaves still unanswered the provoking question of where he will use his two other talented tailbacks, junior Jim Joslin, and sophomore Walt Stahura. In one of the more common experimental backfields this week Joslin has played tailback, with Stahura moving to wing.

But with Simourian back after an injury, and his wingback understudy Ron Eikenberry now available to the second team, the question is further complicated.

Simourian's return, however, puts the team at nearly full strength. Only quarterback Phil Haughey, with a pulled leg muscle, remains on the injury list, with the exception of Dexter Lewis, who is not being counted on as yet to recover from a summer leg injury.

Friday's workout will consist only of calisthenics and light drills in sweatsuits.
