The varsity football team, is its best physical condition in two weeks worked out against UMass plays run by the JVs at Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon.
In the first backfield for the varsity during the drill were tailback Matt Bots ford, fullback Tony Gauntly quarterback Leo Daley, and wingback Ron Eikenberry, subbing for slightly injured John Simourian.
Simourian, with a leg bruise, second-string quarterback Phil Haughey and sophomore fullback Joe Guglieta are the only varsity players on the injured list. Coach Lloyd Jordan said he did not know whether Haughey and Guglieta would be available for Saturday's opener against UMass, but Simourian is expected to see action.
Dexter Lewis, a varsity wingback for the past two years, who gave up football after suffering a knee injury this summer, was a surprise visitor at Soldiers Field. He jogged around the practice field in sweat clothes for most of the afternoon.
Although Lewis has been one of the team's best one of the team's best pass receivers a week department for the Crimson this year, Jordan said there was no significant in his appearance. "Dexter is not in our plans until we see how he develop," Jordan said.
Among those back in action today were tailbacks Jim Jealin and Walt Stahurn, both of whom had been out with music's pulls.
Since little is known of the UMass team, Jordan is unwilling to make any predictions, merely pointing out the fact that the Redman upset Harvard last year by a score of 13 to 7.
