Kelley Almost Upset By Crimson Scullers

Jack Kelley, Jr., winner of every major U.S. singles scull race and the Diamond Sculls at Henley, England nearly met defeat Saturday afternoon from two unheralded Crimson oarsmen.

In the senior doubles race against Kelley and his partner William Knecht on the Charles, Ned Ames and Bill Hoadley finished only two seconds behind the pair over the mile course. Winning time in the sce-saw duel was 6:26.

This near upset was the feature event in the annual New England Amateur Rowing Association and American Rowing Association Regatts. Five Crimson singles and doubles combinations participated, plus three Crimson crews.

Twenty minutes after the senior doubles race Ames and Hoadley met junior Bernard Flynn, House singles champion, in the mile-long college single sculls race. Flynn won easily in the time of 7:30.

In the junior single sculls race freshman Barton Thomas rowed a highly creditable race in finishing second behind Thomas Diamond from Philadelphia.

Stroked by sophomore Toby Baker, the Crimson third heavy crew won the Stewarts Cup by defeating the Crimson light-weight combination boat over the mile distance in 5:43. The Crimson second freshman placed second behind M.I.T. second freshman in the second eights race. Time was 5:40.
