The Big Three shared the glory at their annual triangular lightweight crew races on the Derby River at New Haven Saturday. Princeton took the varsity competition and retained the Goldthwait Cup, while Harvard won the jayvee race and Yale and freshman.
Rowing in a light head wind, the varsity started at a steady 33, which it increased to a 35 after three-quarters of a mile, and then to a 37 with less than a half-mile to go. But Princeton sprinted the final quarter-mile to nose out the Crimson with a 7:06 victory. The varsity, which had kept even with the Tigers for most of the race, finished second in 7:13. Yale was third in 7:18.
In the junior varsity race, stroke John Hadik's boat was about a length behind Princeton with 30 strokes left when the Tiger stroke caught a crab. Before the Princeton eight recovered its balance the jayvees had shot past them to score the Crimson's only win.
For the second week in a row the Yardlings and the Eli freshmen battled it out. And Yale, for the second week in a row, gave the Yardlings a heart-breaking four-foot defeat. But the Crimson and Princeton managed to avenge their loss at the hands of the Yale freshmen when the Eli second freshmen lost to a boat of eight spares--four from Harvard and four from Princeton--none of whom had ever rowed together before.
