Ward Leads Nine to Win Over Dartmouth

Righthander Andy Ward struck out 11, gave up only three hits, and generally pitched flawless ball yesterday as the varsity punched out a 3-0 victory over a lack justre Dartmouth nine.

The win kept the varsity in a tie for the Ivy League lead with Yale who just squeaked by Brown, 1 to 0. Both teams boast records of six won, no losses.

Ward did all that could be asked for yesterday against the Hanover Indians. He was consistently ahead of the batters, walking just three. Only one Dartmouth better hit the ball solidly, with all three Green hits coming on grounders through holes in the infield.

Matt Botsford led the Crimson attack, hitting four singles in four times at bat. But it was Bob Hastings' clutch single to left and an error by the Dartmouth catcher that combined to give the varsity two of its three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

With one out in that inning, Don Butters walked and went to second on a bloop single to right by Botsford. Both runners advanced when Bill Chauneey grounded out to short. Hastings then singled in Butters and Botsford scored walked and Botsford's third hit of the when catcher Mel Brown, trying to catch Hastings heading for second, threw into center field.

The varsity added another run in the sixth. With one away, Butters again day send him to second. A wild pitch by Indian pitcher Bob Feltman advanced both runners a base and a neatly executed squeeze bust by Hill Chauncey brought in the final Crimson run of the day.

Dartmouth was never able to get a man to third and only three times managed to put runners on second. The only Green activity slightly resembling a threat came in the ninth, when with one out. Ward walked two man in a row. With the tying run at the plate, the righthander struck out Bill Beagle and pinchitter Doug Melville to end the game.

In other baseball action yesterday, the J.V. team defeated Suffolk University, 14 to 1.
