First place in the Greater Boston League will be up for grabs this afternoon at 4 p.m. when the amazing varsity baseball team meets the strong Boston College squad at the latter's home field in Chestnut Hill.
Coach Norm Shepard plans to start either Bob Kessler or Ken Rossano, while the Eagles will go with their number one right-hander Ed Buckley. Buckley's record stands at four wins, no losses, the victories coming against Amherst, B. U., Syracuse, and Providence.
Both teams enter today's game undefeated in GBL play. A win will put the Crimson only one game away from the League championship, the nine's only remaining local competition being a June contest against Tufts. The Eagles, should they win, will have a tougher time wrapping up the championship, since they meet most of the League teams twice.
Like the Crimson, BC has captured most of its victories by close margins. The Eagles have won by one run four times this season. In all, BC has won six times and lost only once, the defeat coming at the hands of Rhode Island by a score of 6 to 1.
For the varsity, victorious in 12 out of 14 games to date, John Simourign will start at first, Bob Hastings at second, Bill Cleary at shortstop, Don Butters at third, captain George MacDonald behind the plate, and Dick Hoffman, Henry Channcey, and Matt Botsford in the outfield in left, centr, and right, respectively. Hoffman is currently leading the team in batting with a 451 average.
