Wellesley Will Permit Bike Race; Outing Clubs Set Event for May 7

Wellesley College officials have dropped their objections to the traditional, if not annual, Wellesley Bike Race, and the event is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, the Harvard and Wellesley Outing Clubs announced yesterday.

The race will begin at 4 p.m. from Soldiers Field Road and Boylston St., and the winner is expected to arrive at the Wellesley Quad 39 minutes later, Charles W. Querfeld '55, Outing Club president, said yesterday.

The racers, equipped with maps and wearing numbers so that race officials can check that they do not use automobiles or trucks to improve their speed, have a course of 15 miles to cover in their quest. All contestants will be revived with a picnic supper at Wellesley after the race.

The event was cancelled last year by the Wellesley administration, which objected to the race's being held on a Sunday, and to its commercial sponsor.

Ethel Lariabee, Wellesley '56, and president of the Wellesley Outing Club, explained yesterday, "The administration gave no official reason for the change in policy, but we understand that it preferred a Saturday afternoon to one which might interfere with chapel, classes or meals." This year's race will not be commercially sponsored.

All the University's students and faculty are eligible for the race, but only undergraduates have won it in the past.
