The varsity golf team easily defeated an inexperienced Wesleyan squad yesterday to win its opening match of the season. Led by captain Ted Cooney, the Crimson swept all seven singles matches at the Charles River Country Club.
Cooney turned in the best round of the day, shooting a three under par 69 to down Wesleyan's Herb Camp, 7 and 6. Jim Jones in the number four position and Roger Fleishmann at number seven also played exceptionally well, each winning his match by an easy 7 and 6 score.
The only close match came at the number two position where the Crimson's Jim Bailey edged out Wesleyan's Jeff Dening, 2 and 1. bob Stokes, playing number three, Bruce Thurmond at number five, and Bob Ornsteen at number six, all had comparatively easy times in winning their matches.
Though the team played well, Coach Josh Williams said it is still too early to make any predictions about the rest of the season. "Our next match against Williams will be a lot tougher," he said, "and should give us a better indication of our real strength."
The varsity will play its second home match against Williams next Tuesday.
